This advice has never applied to SUSE, where reiserfs is default and
reliable, and has been for many years (since kernel 2.2 days).

Defragmenting in MS-Windows is a *necessary* step; no Linux software
will defrag an NTFS, and defrag is typically a prerequisite for resizing
the partition.

If you have access to partitioning software for MS-Windows, use it and
reduce the Redmond partition to the size you want to allocate to it.
Leave the remaining disk space unallocated to partitions. Perhaps even a
modern MS-OS can resize partitions for you. The install Linux, which
will partition the remaining free disk space for its needs without
disturbing the C: partition. This method is guaranteed to give you the
expected result; downsizing NTFS with Linux doesn't have a 100% successs
rate.
