> Choose extfs3 format > always, to be safe. This advice has never applied to SUSE, where reiserfs is default and reliable, and has been for many years (since kernel 2.2 days).
> Yes. Defragmenting C: in Windows is a good idea first. Defragmenting in MS-Windows is a *necessary* step; no Linux software will defrag an NTFS, and defrag is typically a prerequisite for resizing the partition. If you have access to partitioning software for MS-Windows, use it and reduce the Redmond partition to the size you want to allocate to it. Leave the remaining disk space unallocated to partitions. Perhaps even a modern MS-OS can resize partitions for you. The install Linux, which will partition the remaining free disk space for its needs without disturbing the C: partition. This method is guaranteed to give you the expected result; downsizing NTFS with Linux doesn't have a 100% successs rate.
