many thanks for your replies, having just joined the group, I see
mention of a meeting tomorrow night, unfortunately due to other
committments I will not be able to attend this time.
I would be happy to replace disks as long as I know what is required.
Steve ask a dummy a simple question and you get a dumb answer(lol) but
where would I look to find if it is using 32 or 64 bit??.

You guys have at least cleared upa little of the mist for me already, it
is much appreciated.
I have had a look at the Ubuntu disk but it seems to freeze up when I
try to go to look at some of the different things in it, so next try
will be the Knoppix disk.
The Modem is an Agere Win Modem.
