Congratulations - you have discovered the linux equivelant to the "C:\>" prompt. "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" is equivalent to "driveletter:path>" in windows/dos. In this case, "demo" is the username, "tty1" is the host name and the current directory (folder) is displayed inside the [ ]. Usually the current directory will be ~ which means "your personal folder" kinda like "My Documents".
only entry I got a response with was "dir"
The linux version of "dir" is "ls", short for "LiSt files". Most distros accept "dir" as well.
that produced a line of info Backups Desktop Documents Mail Music etc
try the command "cd Music" and then type "dir" again. this time it should display a different list of files. I know nothing about Mepis, but assuming it's like every other linux, your prompt should change to "[EMAIL PROTECTED] [~/Music] $" just like the same command would change the promt to "C:\Music>" in windows/dos. I am assuming, Alan, that you have used the "C:\>" prompt in windows or dos? Of course, what most people want is a point and click desktop. The command "startx" should launch a graphical desktop unless you graphics card was not detected properly. However, I find it odd that Mepis didn't launch the graphical desktop automatically. It's past 11pm so I'll stop here. Yuri de Groot
