was here... the changes did not make any difference but I have not

Can you please copy & post string 2 only - looks like it needs reediting.
It was taken letter for letter out of the log file created by the Windows
side, and the init. sequence for NZ added on the end.
That may explain why it looks quite unlike what I am familiar with
running, as GNU/Linux modem init strings :)
