But there was no - (as in the minus sign) in what I typed, it was a ~ (the little squiggle thing that is usually to the left of the row of numbers on the keyboard , ie above and to the left of the "q".) ~ refers to your home directory. I only put it there in case you weren't in your home directory. By the way if you want to go to your home directory, the cd command on its own without anything else on the line takes you there.
