Hi All,
I'm starting a new job next week, the management are happy for me
to take XP off the provided machine and put a Linux desktop on if
it'll keep me happy and make me more productive :o)
Get ready for a shock then (?)..
I've never needed to run linux in a windows environment before but
I understand that I'll need to set up Samba to let me talk to the
servers. With my 'less than guru' level of knowledge I wondered what
distro(s) you'd recommend for this task?
Anything built around Ubuntu is pretty 'up there', with latest patches,
versions, releases;
The ability to keep your install moving, while adding more software to
it, and not having it break, is key.
I'd like it to be KDE based and as quick and trivial to set up as
possible as the current developer leaves on a Friday and I start the
following Monday...
Kubuntu or Mubuntu (Mepis) then. Automated updates & install, smooth as.
..now for the shock:
Prepare for your terms and conditions to be under pressure of
'renegotiation' by morning tea time - the moment your boss realises what
effect this transition is going to have on your immediate productivity :-)
- unless s/he's chucked a fast box with loads of RAM at you, for the
virtualisation that Craig suggests.
Oh, and this happens regardless of O/S.
Cheers,
Andy
Good luck,
Rik
