You missed an important detail...

So I did! It's LAPP web dev, with very little of the front end and no traditional GUI at all, just some of the more 'tricky' CSS, so I'm happy all the tools exist to do what I need to - it's really the connecting to MS file servers that concerns me. If I were to use XP apparently I'd be using Notepad or Dreamweaver for development, and I'm not really a fan of either so I'd like to get linux going.

I've been hearing good things about Eclipse for a while, along with XDebug, so I'll set them up at home and see what happens. I've been putting it off as I haven't been able to find rpms for SuSE 9.1, it's really time I moved onto something a little more modern anyway. OpenOffice should be plenty functional enough for my needs, it's done me fine in the past.

I don't think they are a prejudiced crowd - they seem fully aware that the public face of their business runs on OS software - but a good first linux desktop experience would be nice. I have a KUbuntu 6.06 CD here, so I'll nip down to PC Broker tomorrow and get a 'box' to throw it onto.

Email hadn't occured to me as a problem so thanks for pointing that out Nick, I'll be a little better prepared now,

How well does a 'USB distro' run - is it fast enough to work on full time, or really just for trouble shooting? My problem with something like SLAX would really be that I don't know what I need! I also have speed concerns about Virtualisation, I'll see what the PC is when I get there.

So, here's what I'm thinking now:

1/ Get cheap 'box' and test KUbuntu, Eclipse and XDebug at home. Check KDE & google for a 'connect to Network Neighbourhood widget' and a Samba config tool.
2/ Use KUbuntu as a live CD and make sure the provided PC isn't too curly
3/ Ensure connections to all required servers (inc email) work
4/ Install
5/ Smile

Many thanks for all your help - did I miss anything?

Cheers,

Andy
