Gnome is a bit more like Mac OS. So people coming from there might find it easier to use. KDE is more configurable than Gnome which may or may not be an advantage. Gnome needs less resources and is generally considered faster. I think the choice depends on who you are talking about. Ubuntu was to my knowledge originally rather aimed at poor people and people new to Linux and computers in general than at IT-professionals. For that I'd say Gnome is the better choice. What would be useful would be a clearer choice: I.e.: Someone when someone wants do download a CD he gets a text like "There are three different desktop enviroments you can use. All three together do not fit on one CD, so you have to decide know which one you want to download. If you are new to Linux you might find the first one the best". I personally don't care much for the desktop enviroment I use, because most of what I do is done in the terminal anyway.
