I just added these lines to the suse /etc/boot/menu.lst file, thus regaining
access to the "lost" system.

###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: Mepis

title MEPIS at hda5, kernel 2.6.15-1-586tsc
    kernel (hd0,4)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-1-586tsc root=/dev/hda5

Its essentially a bastardization of the lines above it, except i changed
relevant details. You will of course have to use the ubuntu kernel location.

I booted with a live CD to do this tweaking, as suse had no obvious way of
looking at the content of an unmounted partition
:(

I've just installed suse 10.2 as well and it had a similar issue with
Mepis3.4
being left off the boot menu, but 2 installations of debian(sarge) and one of
etch are fully noted and on the list

The odd thing is when i went to hda5, where Mepis lives, /etc/boot/menu.lst
had disappeared. This created one or two small problems with copying the
relevant lines over to suses menu.lst

What i will probably have to do is look for the exact location of the kernel
and alter a copy of one of suses lines so that it points at the Mepis kernel
instead... I'll just go and try that while i'm in a curious mode... will
 report back later

I think it's fair to assume that something in either grub or suses install
fails to process the more obscure (?) debian based systems menu.lst entry's.
although deleting the mepis one for me went down like a cup of cold stuff.

I've got a multi-boot system onto which I've just added opensuse 10.2. Now,
I
may have missed an option, but...

  1. It overwrote the existing ubuntu grub.
  2. After reinstating the ubuntu grub and updating the menu.lst to include
opensust, it gets halfway and fails.

The approach of not installing a bootloader and updating the ubuntu one
works
fine for fc6, debian sarge and freebsd so far, so what's so special about
 opensuse?
