etc. If I set this to 4.2.2.2 everything is sweet. So, not sure how to
resolve this for good. Using other DNS servers such as

nameserver 202.27.158.40
nameserver 202.27.156.72
as suggested, doesn't work either.

So, I've just been putting up with the changing of dns server address
each time I boot my machine.

To 4.2.2.2 still, it seems.

Did you try using 10.1.1.1?

I just tried setting a static IP address and it doesn't work e.g. hangs
while connecting in browser or mail client.

There could be more to change along with that, like some obstacle at the 10.1.1.1 gateway.. but just getting it to stay working would suffice, you say

No, I haven't been running a firewall

Suggest you do, once the connection is stabilised:

Synaptic - firestarter

Easy wizard to configure, then start it manually each session.

Behind an adsl router, however, i've seldom seen it have work to do.

and yes I guess Xtra's nameservers
should be appropriate, since that's our ISP.

There's a tab at the end of Networking - etho - properties
or somewhere, for disabling "use the isp nameservers"

- then you should be able to save your (re)setting.

Appreciate your help!

Cheers
Matt

As always, sighting the network can offer new ideas. A housecall is possible.

Good luck,
