Sweet, so managed to boot my machine using your suggestions Rik. My
current situation is that every time I boot the machine and at other
times too, the DNS Servers listed under Network settings get reset so it
only contains 10.1.1.1 and I can't connect using firefox, thunderbird,
etc. If I set this to 4.2.2.2 everything is sweet. So, not sure how to
resolve this for good. Using other DNS servers such as

nameserver 202.27.158.40
nameserver 202.27.156.72
as suggested, doesn't work either.

Great. So, let's eliminate:

firewall - have you been running one?

ISP - these are Xtra's nameservers - is that still applicable?

It looks like you should set eth0 a static IP address at, say, 10.1.1.1x
(x = 0-9, or 00-99); press Tab to auto-complete the Subnet mask; and Gateway to 10.1.1.1

Don't forget to press OK when exiting the GUI, to save the new settings, once they are working.

Fingers crossed,
