If it does that again, use CTL+ALT+F1 to get a console and sudo vi
/etc/X11/xorg.conf to fix it. You do need to reboot afterwards but
you can use the reboot command rather than powering off. (Or keep a
backup of the last working file and copy it back over xorg.conf).
I've done plenty of editing xorg.conf from the console, followed by
"sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart", over the last few days. In this case I
couldn't even access any of the ctrl-alt-f[1-6] consoles. (Well, it's
possible that the console was there, but the display stayed stubbornly
blank).
Of course, when the display manager is running ctrl-alt-backspace does
the trick.

A hassle rather than a problem - all it means is that it doesn't work
on automatic. You need to edit the file:
/etc/defaults/915resolution
In that file there are two commented out lines xres and yres. Use
those to set the 1400x1050.
Cheers,
Roy.
