I would be looking to see if sax has wrongly set up something which is
restricting the X server from running at the higher refresh rate. However
the obvious candidates (HorizSync and VertRefresh) are correct according
to the specs here:

Next i would look at why they have included a modeline for 1440x900.
Perhaps it is needed, perhaps it is unduly restrictive. (I assume you have
actually checked it IS running at 1440x900 - xwininfo -root is the command
to test that).

Try commenting out the 1440x900 modeline and restarting X. If it doesn't
fix it uncomment it again.

Afterthought: what does nvidia-settings say?
