Thanks for all the replies! 3 great commands I didn't know about. And I'm
sure I'll get better picture as soon as I get a dvi extension and dispense
with the vga cable it's currently running on.
Here are 4 more you might find useful:-
( As root )
X -help
X -configure probe for devices and write an xorg.conf
X -config file specify a configuration file, relative to the
xorg.conf search path, only root can use
absolute
Modern Displays and video cards can tell the X-11 server what settings
they want in the xorg.conf file and X will then write it for you.
For the extremely rare situation where the above does not work properly,
there is
a bevy of mode line calculators available. The best of breed is 'amlc'.
