Stable, yes - and difficult to use, like not suitable for the OP's purpose. They also don't always work - it depends on the particular way the postscript file is generated. I've programmed a filter a decade ago for inserting commands for printing into existing postscript files, and they fail plenty of times. psutils have the same problem. Postscript is too complex to make a sure-fire application like this. And btw as soon as you use pdf2ps you have mucked up good and proper, and it's a one-way. Once muck, always muck.
