Ok... and not for the real, and some what more boring answer...
I have a client in Akl who is a digital photographer. Processed photos
for storage are ~50mb each.
He's got a 2tb system that cost him $20k and he's got 75gb left.
It's built on Windows.
I won't get the business to sort the problem. He's a good guy and I
fell he's just been taken for a bit of a ride, so I'm just helping him
with the research to see if we can come up with a better solution.
He also should have 10GE from the server to his desktop for photo
processing and indexing. The current 1GE is a bottle neck. No idea
what that stuff costs (hint - anyone).
Steve is right, back up needs to be sorted out as well.
Eventually, we're also talking about putting his stuff on line, so we're
going to need a second box. I'm suggesting that the second box should
be co-located and a peered data connection set up so he can rsync new
stuff to the box. (and don't even get me started on network security!)
I've also priced a 1.2TB DLT tape drive.
Sorry that this is a really boring answer :)
Cheers Don
