Hi John,
I tried cat /var/log/boot but got a message: "nothing to log" when
bring up the command line before booting (I can't think of any other
way to bring up the command line) I'm not sure how I'm supposed to get
the output of dmesg. Some pointers would be appreciated.

It could be a related problem although my system seems to hang the

Hmm. Not quite enough info to even corner which thing is doing it.
Try dig out and post all vaguely relevant bits of /var/log/boot or the
output of dmesg.
