Today David Aikema was heard saying:

<snip>

->> *** I am having difficulties understanding if you are "a server" or "a
->> client"...?
->
->eth0 is (well... will be) connected to the cable modem and needs to use dhcp
->to grab an address from there. this system will not be a dhcp server.

*** Thus you will be the "client" and your ISP the "server". That means
your ISP will setup your client (you) the way they decided to: IP,
nameservers... and host/domainname.

You can, however, control the host/domainname provided by your ISP as far
as your internal network goes. Internally you can call your machines
anyway you want, externally it is the host/domainname provided by your ISP
which will be used.

To change the settings of your internal host/domainname you add

HOSTNAME=myhost
DOMAINNAME=mydomain.myextension

to /etc/sysconfig/network

and this is how your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 looks like:

DEVICE=eth0
IPADDR=
NETMASK=
NETWORK=
BROADCAST=
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
USERCTL=no

while this is your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1:

DEVICE=eth1
IPADDR=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
NETMASK=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
NETWORK=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
BROADCAST=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=none
USERCTL=no

Cheers,
Zoran.
