When I first started into linux, around the time I first got @home
cable, I scoured various resources and this was the only way I ever
found to do this...still the only way I've ever seen to do this.

With the exception of Coyote Linux, I've not seen or heard of a distro
that offers a tidy way of setting up for @home'esque dhcpd calls.  Even
then, at setup, it asks if you need to supply a hostname, if you say yes
and enter one...it plunks the hostname with a -h in front of the call to
dhcpcd.

Since your distro doesn't provide a tidy way of doing this, (IMO) any
way that works for you is the proper way.
