Right, and the hostname the box has I wish to preserve.  However, I am using 
one of these wacky cable networks that requires that you pass the correct 
hostname to the dhcp server in order to retrieve an ip, so I need some way to 
specify that hostname as well.

Thus far the only two solutions that I have come across are:
1) Change the system hostname
- I've already rejected this as there are ways to work around it fairly easily
2) Alter the ifup script to pass a hostname
- This is the most viable solution that I've come across thus far and I've 
done this once before.  However, it seems that there must be a better way to 
do the same.
