Okay, on the bug - I won't worry. Actually, Caldera 3.1 couldn't make a boot floppy anyway!
It appears that Linux never gets to boot. I go through the hardware check, then get the black screen. I never see a GRUB menu or anything else. Until I did this install I would get a "Can't find Operating system" message from the BIOS but this made sense because the disks were uninitialized with nothing installed.
