Not really. I compiled it piece by piece while maintaining the existing installation of KDE 3.0.5 from RH packages. I mostly use KMail and Konqi, and I was very interested in how kdemultimedia was coming along. I compiled arts, kdelibs, kdebase, kdenetwork at first. All installed separately under /opt/kde3 (RH 8 keeps KDE in /usr), modified the login manager to start a customized startkde script and played. Later installing kdemultimedia and whatever else I wanted (kdegames, kdeedu and the like). I wrote up a SxS on how to keep that separate from the standard RH-KDE stuff.
