I bought some Varta Ready2Use slow-discharge AA cells from Bunnings about
two years ago, another batch about a year later, and some Eneloops from
DealExtreme about six months ago.

I use them in my camera and various LED torches, my son uses 8 in his
radio-control transmitter.

They charge in a NiMh charger. The charger I have has a maximum charge
current of 2000mA, so it takes just over an hour to charge the 2000 mAh
cells.

This report suggests you use a 1-hour charger or slower, not a super-fast
(15-minute) charger. He finds little practical difference between all of the
brands that he tested.

My totally unscientific assessment cannot distinguish between the Varta and
the Eneloops in my camera (2xAA), head torch (2xAA) or various
high-brightness single-AA LED torches (also from Deal Extreme). They last
as-well-as or better than the standard NiMh that I used to use, and are
always charged.
