Nope, not really, the opensource equivalent drivers for things these days, such as nouveau, are doing a thing known as "Mode setting", which is doing all the graphic set-up that X usually does at the kernel level at boot, and then the console runs on that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mode-setting So when you actually start X, it doesn't initialise the display from scratch, just changes control over.
