Nope, not really, the opensource equivalent drivers for things these
days, such as nouveau, are doing a thing known as "Mode setting",
which is doing all the graphic set-up that X usually does at the
kernel level at boot, and then the console runs on that.

So when you actually start X, it doesn't initialise the display from
scratch, just changes control over.
