A quick ddg.gg'ing indicates the "Firmware" is basically a binary blob
of code that was previously part of the kernel, but has somewhat
recently been ripped out and stuffed in its own file to make licensing
clearer.

I notice here, that the trick to disabling the modeset trick that was
possibly starting the kerfuffule is
the kernel flags:
  nomodeset
or
  radeon.modeset=0

However, nobody can tell me what "CP" or "PFP" stand for.

You might out of interest wish to grep dmesg and find out exactly
which firmware libraries you need =)
