least it works).

As for ati/nvidia, some (many/most/few?) amd chipsets have integrated
ati, so you can't avoid paying for it on your mobo. That gave me
opportunity to try them out - I still stuck an nvidia card in. 

The ati oss driver (radeon?) is way better than nouveau. It's nothing to
ring home about, but it's usable, for some definition of usable. Nouveau
does handle more than 1280x1024 now, but if you want to get any work
done, make sure you turn 3d off.

The proprietory nvidia driver works well, though setting up dual-monitor
is a PITA in the absence of sax2. I didn't try the closed ati.
The i915 driver works ok in 3d, although glxgears cranks only at 60.
