If you get recent enough copies of mesa, the new versions of mesa (8.x
series ) have an LLVM compilation phase to make a lot of the things a
lot lot faster and it offloads the software stuff that it has to do on
the CPU much better.

i915 + intel i5 runs glxgears nicely at ~900fps and thats *with*
xcompmgr running.

drop xcompmgr and the fps goes to ~1300 =)
