Looks like you've got the ALSA plugin that routes programs using ALSA
to a local pulse audio server instead, and only pulse audio gets a
real ALSA connection .

tried mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=0.1  ( which should override routing
via pulse )

?

Also, try killing the pulseaudio daemon (somehow, good luck) in case
its locking control to alsa.

Additionally, try renaming the pulse-alsa.conf file to be
pulse-alsa.conf.bak just to see what happens.
