I had this happen suddenly to my HP Pavilion.
Strangely, VLC can still play to the speakers but Gnome and XFCE cannot
seem to work either by setting the default output to ALSA or pulseaudio :(
Sound will come out of the earphone socket, but not the speakers or
HDMI. So I plug the HDMI in for the video and connect the earphone up to
the stereo speakers.
