I'm interested if it's a software problem and you find a solution. I have the same problem but not on a laptop, on a PC. Sound is ok on the front sockets for headphones and microphone, but nothing is coming out of the speakers' output in the back. When volume is at maximum I can hear a bit of static in the speakers when I plug the wire in. It's not a hardware problem, this PC being new out-of-the-box from a source I trust. Eventually I resorted to re-direct all output to HDMI for now.
