Is it possible that you have finger trouble? The mute button to the immediate right of the ESC key on a ThinkPad is NOT a toggle. To get the system un-muted you have to press one of the other two sound-control buttons. Also none of the 3 available standard sound control programs does the whole job. You need your desk's standard one ( phonon for KDE ), pavucontrol, and alsamixer to be able to have complete control. Audio on Linux is still a total mess.
