Looks like a lcd monitor from a quick google on the model number. They work best at their "native" resolution - which is usually the same as the maximum resolution. What does xrandr tell you? what recent updates have you installed? post (preferably by a web service such as pastebin) your Xorg.0.log what is your video card? what does your xorg.conf say (in fact you rarely need one these days, what happens if you start without one? (change it's name temporarily) Why are you using startx?
