Hi all.
2 or 3 days ago my monitor lost its set resolution resulting in full screen
displays being cropped top/bottom.
The monitor is an AOC model 193FW 19 inch wide screen with max resolution of
1440 x 900 (16x10). I first thought the monitor was faulty but the monitor's
hardware adjustments would not fix the problem which has turned out to be
software related.
With icewm 'startx starticewm', starts the X display with the default
resolution above although in xorg.conf the preferred resolution and all
alternatives are all 1280 x 800. This is also the resolution set in the
Mageia Control Centre. I can change the resolution using 'kcmshell4 monitor'
from a terminal but this does not stick between restarts. At 1280x800 the
monitor displays correctly.
Also tried 1280X720 (16x9) with no joy.
I have looked through xorg log but this is new territory for me
Any/all ideas most welcome
Looks like a lcd monitor from a quick google on the model number. They
work best at their "native" resolution - which is usually the same as
the maximum resolution.
It is lcd - and i find it very nice to use
What does xrandr tell you?
xrand show resolutions 1440x900 to 400x300 all @ 60 - 75 Hz
what recent updates have you installed?

I gather the log file is overwritten every time X is started, am I correct?
what is your video card?

what does your xorg.conf say (in fact you rarely need one these days,
what happens if you start without one? (change it's name temporarily)
Deleted xorg.conf. Then restarted X etc. Startup msg is
"(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
and then used defaults. This time xorg.conf was not recreated, last time
it was!
Why are you using startx? Most distros include a display manager.
starticewm requires X to be already running. Therefore I run startx 1st
The monitor started correctly today from a cold boot. Strange how it has
behaved over the last few days. I hope its not failing. Can I safely
delete all xorg.con files now?
Thanks for your help Nick
