Sorry I haven't got back around to replying to the helpful advice on
this topic.

This worked fine.

Couldn't get this one to run - didn't understand the command - what is
/dev/zero?

I have run disk checks on both usb hard drives booted in windows 7.

My version was only 2010.8.8 external FUSE 28.

Maybe a problem?

Anyway, a week later I tried it again and the copy command worked
perfectly fine on a 30Gb file.

A few days later I did another operation copying from one usb hd to
another usb hd both ntfs formatted and it fell over again....

At this point I've given up, I'm installing a different later linux
version and see if my life is easier :-)

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
Regards,
  Bryce Stenberg.
