Another option is to use Ethernet over Power adapters. I have 4 in my house and hence no cables running across rooms or down the stairs. Each EoP adapter links up with others and creates an encrypted network. Absolutely brilliant and pretty good speed too - I've had no problems at all streaming 1080P video around the house. The ones I'm using are made by Netcomm. Not the cheapest but a great long term investment that can change rooms / houses at any time. http://www.netcommwireless.com/product/powerline/np204
