I chose a Vodafone (= Huawei R205) Mobile Wifi for my trips to
Central Southland and put it on a pre-pay SIM. Sorry, was
connecting with Android tablet and WinXP not GNU/Linux.

I was tossing up between wifi & usb modems but glad I chose Wifi.
Best features:
- both laptop and son's tablet simultaneously connected to interweb
- can find the best mobile reception window / door ledge / high spot
and leave the modem there then connect over wifi to my laptop.

Regards,
Neil
