Hi,
 the old favourite::

Memory test. run the memtest86 (for many iterations (2 hours or more, some like 24 hours)) and see if the memory fails.

Next,
grab a usb stick with live linux on it. (any distro - pick your favourite) and run this. Does it lock up?

If it dies during the memory test, you have bad memory. Reseat all memory sticks, or buy more..

If it dies during the usb stick live running, you have a bad computer, or bad hard disk + usb keyaboard + mouse..

Repeat the live usb stick stick, but with hard drives disconnected, or with new keyboard + mouse...
If it dies here, motherboard/peripherals are dead...

OR...
Bite the bullet and get a new computer. How old is the computer? Is it worth doing hours of diagnostic work to fix a computer
that will soon die anyhow? Try out a cubieboard.

Cheers,
 Derek.

p.s. to keep the list police happy, linux content is::
memtest86 is a linux thing that has saved much anxt.
live linux distros are the best thing since sliced bread.

Hi all, could I have some words of wisdom pls re this problem.

Every so often the box just stops and screen freezes. No mouse, no keyboard. I have to switch off then reboot. The 2nd last time this happened I had booted, got to the login screen and left it idle for a time. Screen was frozen so tried to login from another box but wifi had not started (naturally). Next time I logged in & went straight to kde system guard to see what was running. The last item started was sleep with cmd "K sleep 60". There was another app started by mgaapplet but was a zombie so I deleted mgaapplet & crashed the box. Until now I thought it was an app I was running but not now.

Any suggestions as to where to look to solve this problem are most welcome.

uname -a = "Linux TheBox 3.12.20-server-1.mga4 #1 SMP Fri May 16 16:03:00 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux"

Memory currently 501.4mg/1.5gb. sleep is still running with the highest pid.

TIA

Barry
