Hi,
 the hardware is 6-8 years old.
  the memory is tiny small.
Should never have bothered installing ubuntu 14, the box was swapping mightily towards the end.

Not really surprising with hindsight. such boxes are never going to run well.

 yes - it was lousy - lousy that I thought it would work....

Thus, using lubuntu with the much much smaller footprint was always going to be a good thing....

============================
I have not been tracking Mir and wayland - one wonders if a new graphics engine will be smaller and easier on footprint.
I suspect not - code only ever grows in size.

Cheers,
 Derek.

You are talking about a mainstream distro version burning and smoking
totally? In this kind of year I'd have thought that to be pretty lousy.
