Hi,
As some of you may remember, I had advised Barry to "dump the box,
get a new one". The question was "why put all this time into a junker?"
Shortly after, I had the same problem. The computer was locking up and
my son was short on detail about why. There was no comment
about misuse of it (frequent manual power offs - nothing).
There were kernel messages about the drive giving head/sector errors -
cannot remember the message.
A 24 hour run of memtest found nothing.
remove the two oldest (and most used) drives in the box - just use the
remaining drive.
A reinstall of ubuntu 14.04 + upgrade to 14:10 gave a box that was
hideously unstable. Some kernel messages about fbcon being unhappy.
hmm.... (the above advice was remembered - but ignored for the moment).
Installed latest lubuntu on this box. Perfect. All good. windows etc run
quick. Very happy.
So yes - lubuntu reigns!
Cheers,
Derek.

A belated reply to say thank you to all who offered words of wisdom re
my problem. I never did find what was going wrong, but an update to
the kernel appears to have solved the problem of the box locking up
randomly.

Hi all, could I have some words of wisdom pls re this problem.
Every so often the box just stops and screen freezes. No mouse, no
keyboard. I have to switch off then reboot. The 2nd last time this
happened I had booted, got to the login screen and left it idle for a
time. Screen was frozen so tried to login from another box but wifi had
not started (naturally). Next time I logged in & went straight to kde
system guard to see what was running. The last item started was sleep
with cmd "K sleep 60". There was another app started by mgaapplet but
was a zombie so I deleted mgaapplet & crashed the box. Until now I
thought it was an app I was running but not now.
Any suggestions as to where to look to solve this problem are most
welcome.
uname -a = "Linux TheBox 3.12.20-server-1.mga4 #1 SMP Fri May 16
16:03:00 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux"
Memory currently 501.4mg/1.5gb. sleep is still running with the highest
pid.
TIA
Barry
