A belated reply to say thank you to all who offered words of wisdom re
my problem. I never did find what was going wrong, but an update to the
kernel appears to have solved the problem of the box locking up randomly.

system guard to see what was running. The last item started was sleep

Any suggestions as to where to look to solve this problem are most welcome.

Memory currently 501.4mg/1.5gb. sleep is still running with the highest
