A second option is the purchase of a usb wireless card that does not have enclosed drivers.

Such a device will (most probably) work on linux.

Use a mobile phone in tethered mode (either USB or Bluetooth) to establish the initial connection for the computer required to get set up. Failing that, you'll need to get someone to copy your downloads onto some sort of media that your computer can read.
