Given the circumstances the computer in question is most likely a
laptop. How do you plug a wireless card into that one?

Are there some USB wifi thingies that are guaranteed not to need another
bit of driver, even if they're slow ones? I believe my laptop wifi
needs another package installed, but some old wifi USB sticks don't -
but I'm not totally sure in either case because I'd have always
configure them with active network connection.
