Maybe I wont bother anyway.

It's amazing what a weekend and a rested pair of eyes can do.
After fooling around a bit with camorama, cheese and luvcview the problem have 
all but vanished :)

With "luvcview -s 640x480" the optia is stil jagged along thin diagonal lines, 
but the resolution makes up for it. 

I guess the optics in the Philips are probably better.

Then I found the gconf key /apps/ekiga/devices/video/size and changed that 
from 0 to 1 (QCIF 176x144 to CIF 352x288) and performance i perfectly fine.

Only regret now is that there is no microphone on them.
