Hi, I think unless you are using a sound server, the sample rate must be set from the application side, even if you set a default in ALSA it would be overridden by the application value. In the case you want to record from a sound server, then (at least for pulse) you can use any sample rate and the server will adjust it internally to the maximum device sample rate, there is absolutely no gain in quality by setting it higher than the maximum supported, but it is allowed.
