This is not a concern for Debian or Fedora. They're happily shipping
universal images and kernels. I'm not sure I understand why this is a
concern for us?

That's not quite what I meant. If everyone is running the same image,
you benefit from having other people building and running and putting
through QA the same code as you do. If everyone on the other hand
builds for their own little board, things will regress quietly, and
when they do, you have only yourself for help.
