OCLUG gave NCF $4247.90 -- and now the NCF wants to charge _every member_ of a low-volume mailing list $12/year? Yes, I'd call it an obstacle, both the cost for some & the PITA for anyone who doesn't need to be an NCF member.

Imagine trying to get anyone new involved in OCLUG -- "BTW, it will cost you $12/year to get meeting notices and take part in discussions."

Surely there's a better solution that this.

Caveats:

It could be that the mailing list and discussion groups would only be
available to registered NCF "members". However, NCF will give an email
(which likely constitutes being a member) at a suggested donation of
$1 / month. NCF does, of course, also act as an ISP and offers various
network option. Several of us are already members/subscribers. If the
NCF involvement with Linux flourishes, I suspect the $1 / month level
of contribution is not an obstacle.
