being a linux user for 10 years, I disagree to some extent :)

Linux is a desktop OS as well. I use it every day as a desktop PC and so does
my non-geek wife and so do the 4 kids and recently my computer illiterate 51
year old sister...

Computer illiterates can not reliably install and set up windows either.
That's the point. They need it preinstalled or they need someone to set it up
for them. I know this because this is one of the things I do. I set up and
install software for computer illiterates - mostly windows. But it doesn't
matter which one you set up and put in front of a simple user. Its still all
point and click these days. But the big difference is that with windows they
always can manage to screw it up a lot worse than a linux box :)

What most people see as user unfriendly is really just user different. The
start button doens't have start on it. You can confuse these people just as
easily by skinning XP :)

I'm looking forward to longhorn. It will be different and it will break a lot
of old software. Linux will likely be more compatible with the older software
and make linux look like much more of an alternative for the older PC - and
the old users...
