As Chad stated, there really isn't one "best, easiest" Linux.  You need 
to find out what works for you.

Although, using Red Hat 9 wasn't a good first choice, as it is several 
years old, and things are updated quickly in the world of Linux.

Try a current distro of almost any variety (preferably one geared toward 
new Linuxers) and let us know what you like, and what you don't.  It 
will be easier to re-direct you to other distros based on that feedback, 
I would think.
