A)  Always mention what distro you're using.  For instance, Gentoo never
runs a runlevel 5.
B)  Run, as root,

grep EE /var/log/xorg*.log

and see what the problem is.  This will return all the errors in the log
file from the last time you ran it.  It will give you a clue as to what
to fix.
