Wow. This probably isn't what you wanted to hear, but I'd say reinstall X, at least. Seriously, X barely got through reading your configuration file. If there was an error in it, X should have complained instead of just dying. I'd assume there's some file system corruption in one of the executables. If this happened to me, I'd reinstall X.org.
